Su Hsien Hsu, a native of Taiwan, began her musical training on the piano at the age of six and studied the cello at the age of eight. Prior to arriving in the United States, Su Hsien earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from National Taiwan Normal University in Cello and Piano. She also holds a Master of Music degree and Performance Diploma from the Boston Conservatory.
In her fifth year of being in Boston, Su Hsien has performed with many professional orchestras and ensembles throughout New England area. As a soloist, Su Hsien frequently premieres new music pieces by young composers at various venues such as Boston Conservatory’s Seully Hall and New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. While studying with cellist Andrew Mark at the Boston Conservatory, Su Hsien performed in studio showcases for younger students. In 2008, Su Hsien appeared as soloist for Haydn’s C Major Cello Concerto under Chun-Ming Chen and his student orchestra.
As a chamber musician, Su Hsien actively participates in various events. In 2002, she was selected to be a member of the Chamber Music Talents Training Project of the Taiwan Council for Cultural Affairs. At the Boston Conservatory, Su Hsien has won the Honors Chamber Competition five consecutive times in both piano trio and string quartet ensembles which led to performances in the Honors Chamber Concert series.
In 2005, Su Hsien formed Cello4, the first Taiwanese cello quartet with her teacher Ling-Yi Ou Yang. The following year, Cello4 received the Golden Melody Award for Best Performance with a live recording of their debut concert at the National Recital Hall in Taiwan. Cello4 regularly gives performances in Taiwan including an invitation to perform in the opening of the Golden Melody Award Ceremony, which was broadcasted on national Taiwanese television. Cello4 completed their second album “Two Years” in the summer of 2008.
Also an accomplished pianist, Su Hsien was awarded top honors in competitions in Taiwan. From 2007 to 2009, Su Hsien served as pianist for the MIT Chinese Choral Society and performed several concerts in MIT Kresge Auditorium. Currently, she is staff accompanist at the Boston Conservatory.
