Molly Furlong

Degrees of jamification: Molly’s music education is noteworthy to say the least. At age 5 she began violin and piano instruction and started playing trombone in 5th grade. Throughout grade school and high school, she was part of several symphonies, ensembles and programs. These included: Manchester Youth Symphony Orchestra (violin and trombone); Suzuki Music School Camp on Lake Winnipesauke (violin); UNH summer program SYMS (trombone); Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (trombone); Manchester Community Music School Big Band; New Hampshire All-State competitions (jazz and classical, trombone). Next came Berklee College of Music, from which she graduated with a bachelor's in Trombone Performance and a bachelor's in Contemporary Music Writing and Production.

Extrajamicular activities: Molly works with MIT Big Band and Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra as a brass section leader. A lover of rock and ska music, she was a member of New England-based Skatitude, and has also performed with Zili Misik, The Compaq Big Band, The Beantown Swing Orchestra, Rising Tribe, Kina Zore, and many more. Molly also enjoys performing in music theatre and has contributed her talents and horn to a number of productions, including The Music Man, Singin' In the Rain, Swing!, Ragtime, Oklahoma!, and many more.

How Molly jams with you: Having taught private lessons since high school, Molly strives to make music fun to learn (akin to playing a game) to help younger students stay engaged and interested. She takes a casual approach, and seeks a balance of enjoyment, music appreciation, and continued learning by mixing student favorites with traditional instruction.  She encourages students to transcribe, compose, and explore songwriting, all of which gets recorded in their own personalized musical journals.
